Jimmy Walker finishes T4 at Riviera, five finish Top-10 on Nationwide Tour...

There was a full slate of golf action this past weekend, with the PGA TOUR playing the Northern Trust Open at Riviera, and the Nationwide Tour kicking of the 2012 season in Bogota, Colombia for the Pacific Rubiales Colombia Championship.

NORTHERN TRUST OPEN
A total of 20 GPT alums made the cut at Riviera, led by Jimmy Walker, who shot rounds of 72-66-72-69 to finish T4 at 5-under par. Walker birdied the final hole to jump into the Top-5, and he earned his third Top-10 finish in six events so far in 2012. He currently ranks 21st in the FedEx Cup standings.

J.B. Holmes fired an opening-round 67 and finished at T8 for the week at 4-under, while Bubba Watson shot rounds of 70-69-72-71 and finished T13 at 2-under. Watson is off to a great start to 2012, with all four of his finishes inside the Top-20 (T5 at WM Phoenix Open). He currently sits 23rd in FedEx Cup points.

Brandt Snedeker rebounded from his opening round 75 and closed out the week with rounds of 70-68-70 to finish T17 at 1-under par, along with Michael Thompson and Marc Leishman, who also finished at 1-under. Snedeker, who won in a playoff at the Farmers Insurance Open a few weeks back, ranks fifth in the FedEx Cup standings, while the T17 was Leishman’s best finish so far this year.

Kevin Chappell and Kevin Stadler round out the Top-25, finishing T24 at even-par. For Stadler it was his second Top-25 finish in the last two weeks.

NATIONWIDE TOUR – PACIFIC RUBIALES COLOMBIA CHAMPIONSHIP
It was a great start to the 2012 Nationwide Tour season for our GPT alums, with two guys finishing runner-up and five finishing in the Top-10. Andres Gonzales shot a final-round 68, which included a birdie on the final hole to finish T2, one shot back of winner Skip Kendall, who also birdied the final hole to earn the win. Andrew Svoboda joined Gonzales at T2, thanks in part to his 66-67 in rounds two and three.

James Hahn shot rounds of 70-69-67-70 and finished T4 at 8-under par, while Kevin Johnson finished T6 at 7-under and Michael Connell finished solo 10th at 6-under. Johnson closed with a final-round 67 to vault into the Top-6, while Connell shot a pair of 69s to close out the weekend.

For the week, a total of 33 GT alums made the cut, with 14 players finishing in the Top-20. Brian Smock finished T11 at 5-under par; while Jason Allred, Tyrone Van Aswegen, Ryan Hietala and Michael Sim finished T13 at 4-under par. Rounding out the Top-20 were four players who finished T20 at 3-under par for the week, including Fabian Gomez, Steve LeBrun, Troy Merritt and Erik Flores.

That’s a wrap for this week. Next up we’ve got two events on the PGA TOUR this week – The WGC Accenture Match Play Championships down in Tucson (Feb. 22-26), and the Mayakoba Golf Classic south of the border (Feb. 23-26). The Nationwide Tour will have a few weeks off before getting back to action Mar. 1-4 at the Panama Claro Championship. Good luck to everyone playing this week, either in Arizona or in Mexico, and as always, check back here for a complete recap of all the action!

Dahmen finishes runner-up, takes early lead in Q-School Challenge...

Brad Hopfinger shot a bogey-free 67 in the final round and finished at 13-under 200 to edge out Joel Dahmen by one shot to earn the win in the Gateway Pro Tour’s fourth Arizona Winter Series tournament of the season at Trilogy Power Ranch.

Hopfinger shot rounds of 68-65-67 over the three days, and was nearly flawless, recording 14 birdies and just one bogey, which happened on the par-3 sixth hole in the first round. He finished the last 48 holes bogey free.

Hopfinger started the day tied for first with Dahmen at 9-under, and put some pressure on early with three birdies on the front
nine. Dahmen couldn’t keep up with Hopfinger, playing even-par on the front, and as they made the turn Hopfinger
was looking at a three-shot lead sitting at 12-under par. Dahmen cut the deficit to two shots after birdies on 10 and 13, and gave himself a chance after trimming the lead to one after his birdie on the par-5 17th. Hopfinger left the door open after his par on the final hole, but Dahmen couldn’t capitalize and also made par, securing the win for Hopfinger.

Dahmen shot rounds of 65-68-68 and finished the week with 18 birdies, one eagle and five bogeys for his best finish of the year.

Scott Harrington started the final round one shot back and shared the lead at 10-under after his birdie on the par-3 fourth hole, but he slowed down after that, recording just one more birdie to finish solo third at 10-under par.

Brady Stockton, coming off his win two weeks ago at the SCOR Golf Classic at Raven Verrado, shot a final-round 68 to finish fourth at 8-under par, while Drew Stoltz, Eric Meierdierks and Brian Kontak finished T5 at 7-under 206. Stoltz fired a bogey free 66 to jump from 20th into the Top-5.

PGA TOUR vet and Scottsdale resident Ted Purdy was in the field this week at Trilogy, finishing T11 after shooting rounds of
71-69-68. This is the second GPT event Purdy has played in this season – he finished T14 at Anthem in January.

Dahmen might be a little disappointed in his runner-up finish this week, but he can take solace in the fact that he takes the early lead in the Q-School Challenge “Points Race” since Hopfinger is not a full-time GPT member. Harrington currently sits second in the “Points Race”, followed by Stockton in third and Stoltz, Meierdierks and Kontak in fourth. The Q-School Challenge is a
three-tournament “Points Race” that will award the winner free entry ($4,500) to 2012 PGA TOUR Q-School.

Next up on the GPT is a stop at Vista Verde, Feb. 21-23, followed by a visit to the Wigwam, Feb. 28-Mar.1, where the winner of the Q-School Challenge will be crowned .

Levin continues solid play following Top-5 finish at WM Phoenix Open...

Famed Pebble Beach was the latest stop on the PGA TOUR, and a number of GPT alums had strong outings at the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am.

Ken Duke was the highest former GPT player on the leaderboard, finishing T7 at 10-under par. Duke got off to a torrid start, shooting a first-round 8-under 64 that included 7 birdies and an eagle. Actually, most of that came on the back-nine at Pebble Beach Golf Links which saw him card six birdies and an eagle on the way to shooting a blistering 28 on the backside.

Duke sat near the top of the leaderboard after the first round, but couldn’t keep pace the rest of the week, shooting rounds of 73-65-74 for his T7 finish, the best finish so far this year for the 43-year-old who finished seventh on the Nationwide Tour money list last year to earn his 2012 PGA TOUR card.

Three other players joined Duke in the Top-10, including Spencer Levin, who was on his way to winning the WM Phoenix Open last week before faltering down the stretch. He rebounded nicely though, shooting rounds of 69-69-71-68 to finish T9 at 9-under par. His final round at Pebble Beach included five birdies and just one bogey.

Kevin Streelman and Jimmy Walker joined Levin at 9-under par – Streelman actually was at 13-under late in the final round, but he was four-over in his last three holes to fall back to T9. Walker shot steady rounds of 69-68-71-69 to earn his second Top-10 of the young season.

For the week, 22 GPT alums made the cut, with four finishing in the Top-10 and seven in the Top-25.

Steven Bowditch closed with a final-round 68 to finish T15 at 8-under par, while Richard Lee used an opening-round 65 and a final-round 69 to finish T15 alongside Bowditch. Lee carded seven birdies and just two bogeys in the first round at Monterey Peninsula, and finished with a 33 on the final nine on Sunday at Pebble Beach to record his best finish of the season.

Bowditch may have found a new best friend in actor/comedian Ray Romano, his playing partner in the pro-am. The duo finished fifth in the pro-am portion of the event at 30-under, the first time that Romano has made the cut in the pro-am in his 13th try.

Robert Garrigus finished T20 at 7-under par, his second Top-20 of the year (finished second at Humana Challenge); while rookie Brian Harman put together a fantastic first round that earned him a Top-20 finish. That hot first round 64 included two eagles, five birdies and just one bogey at Pebble Beach. He shot 73-71-71 the rest of the way, but still cracked the Top-20, his best career finish on the PGA TOUR. Harman also paired with Gregg Ontiveros to share the pro-am title with Padraig Harrington and J.P. McManus at 35-under par.

Kevin Stadler closed with a final-round 68 to finish T25 at 6-under par, Sean O’Hair finished T29 at 5-under par, and Charley Hoffman opened with a 67 and finished T35 at 4-under par.

For complete results from the AT&T National Pro-Am at Pebble Beach, CLICK HERE.

Next up the PGA TOUR heads to Riviera for the Northern Trust Open, Feb. 16-19. Great job at Pebble this week guys, and good luck to everyone who is in the Northern Trust field this week. As always, check back here for a complete recap!

Winner of 3-event Points Race will earn entry fee for 2012 PGA TOUR Q-School...

Three tournaments are already in the books for the 2012 Gateway Pro Tour season, which also marked the end of the first of four “Points Races” scheduled throughout the year. Brady Stockton was the first winner, earning an exemption into the Nationwide Tour’s BMW Charity Pro-Am. The next three tournaments will make up the second “Points Race”, which will award the winner free entry into 2012 PGA TOUR Q-School ($4,500).

“The Nationwide Tour exemption and Q-School Challenge Points Races have been extremely popular among the players, and we are excited to be able to offer up four different Points Races for the 2012 season,” said Ryan Pray, Executive Director of the Gateway Pro Tour.

The quest for the Q-School Challenge “Points Race” will begin this week at Trilogy Power Ranch, Feb. 14-16. Vista Verde will host the second of three events on the slate, Feb. 21-23, and the winner will be crowned at Wigwam Golf Club, Mar. 14-16. ONLY GPT members are eligible to participate in the Q-School “Points Race”.

This is the second of four planned “Points Races” the GPT will hold throughout the 2012 Arizona Winter Series season, which will award a total of two Nationwide Tour exemptions and two Q-School Challenge bonuses during the year. The second Nationwide Tour exemption Points Race will be conducted during Winter Series Tournaments 7-9, while the second Q-School Bonus will be awarded during tournaments 10-12.

Memberships for the 2012 season are still being accepted, with the cost of the membership fee only $1,500. All memberships are through Dec. 31, 2012.

Additional membership information and tournament pricing can be found on the Gateway Pro Tour website (www.gatewayprotour.com), or if you are ready to apply for membership, you can do so online at http://gatewayprotour.com/arizona-tournament/entry-info/.

It’s already been a great start to the 2012 campaign, and we are excited to see what happens in the upcoming weeks as players vie for the coveted Q-School bonus. Congrats to Brady Stockton for earning the Nationwide Tour exemption, and good luck to everyone competing for the Q-School bonus.

Levin led after second and third rounds, couldn’t hold on for first career PGA TOUR win...

Through 63 holes of the Waste Management Phoenix Open it looked like the Gateway Pro Tour would produce back-to-back winners on the PGA TOUR. Last week Brandt Snedeker won in a playoff at the Farmers Insurance Open, and this week Spencer Levin looked like he was going to run away from the field for his first career victory.

But as we witnessed last week when Kyle Stanley lost a three-shot lead on the final hole to lose in a playoff, golf can sometimes be cruel and Levin fell victim to same fate that Stanley did.

Levin opened with a 65, then put together a fantastic 8-under 63 in round two to take a three shot lead. His third-round 68 grew his lead to six shots going into the final round, and it appeared he would coast to a victory. He started off a little shaky on the front nine in the final round, but made a clutch par-saving putt on the ninth hole to keep his lead at four shots over Ben Crane and Stanley.

But then he started to find some trouble. After making just two bogeys in the first three rounds, he had four bogeys and a double on the final day, including a stretch where he was five-over on holes 11-15, which included a double-bogey on the par-5 15th which saw him hit the cart path off his drive, punch out of a cholla cactus for his second shot, and hit his third shot into the water.

“I was aiming right off the tee, trying to draw it with the wind, and I felt like I made a pretty good swing and it stayed straight, and I saw it bounce really big, and I knew that probably wouldn’t be very good,” Levin said after his round. “Yeah, it was under a cactus. I got it out in play, hit a good second shot to get it in play, and then the third shot I didn’t feel like I hit that bad a shot. I pushed it a little bit, but I guess I didn’t hit enough club. I thought 4 iron would go over the green and 5 iron didn’t carry. So I don’t know what happened, I just came out of it a little bit, I guess. But when that ball went in the water it was a complete shock to me. I was thinking it would fly in the bunker, let alone not carry the water. So that was kind of tough there.”

He fell two shots back of Kyle Stanley after his costly double-bogey, and he couldn’t make up any ground over the next three holes (par-par-par) on his way to a solo third place finish at 13-under par.

He was extremely disappointed after his round, but he remained positive. This was Levin’s second best finish on the PGA TOUR (finished second at Mayakoba Classic), and he’s coming off a 2011 campaign where he notched six Top-10 finishes.

“I’ve just got to find a way to maybe just tell myself it is a big deal because that’s what we all strive for, but in the grand scheme of things it’s really not,” he said. “My family still loves me, my friends are still my friends, and I’m still going to eat dinner tonight. I guess I’ve just got to go with that mindset next time I’m in that situation because I did not think like that today at all.”

For the week, a total of 25 GPT alums made the cut, with three finishing in the Top-10 and six finishing in the Top-20.

Brendan Steele and Bubba Watson both shot 11-under for the tournament and finished T5. Watson played in the final group with Levin and Webb Simpson and shot a 1-under 70 in the final round to notch his third Top-10 of this young season, while Steele put together a solid final-round 64 to jump into the Top-5, his best finish so far this year.

Chris Stroud shot rounds of 68-70-66-71 to finished T12, his second Top-15 of the year; while Martin Flores and Marc Leishman finished T19 at 7-under par.

Other notables in the field include Gary Woodland, who finished T26 at 6-under par; J.B. Holmes and Sean O’Hair, who finished T45 at 3-under par; and last week’s winner Brandt Snedeker, who shot rounds of 71-70-73-68 to finish T50 at 2-under par.

Next up on the PGA TOUR is the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, Feb. 9-12. We’ll be keeping an eye on Spencer Levin – who knows, maybe he can rebound with a win just like Kyle Stanley did last week. Check back here to see how he and the rest of the GPT alums fare at Pebble Beach.

Good luck everyone!

Shoots bogey-free 5-under in final round, edges out Dillon for spot in May’s BMW Charity Pro-Am...

Brady Stockton shot a final-round 5-under 67 and made a par on the first playoff hole to beat Eric Meierdierks in the SCOR Golf Classic on the Gateway Pro Tour. The win was Stockton’s third career victory on the GPT, but more importantly, it earned him the win in the three-tournament Points Race for an exemption into the Nationwide Tour’s BMW Charity Pro-Am, May 17-20 in Greenville, South Carolina.

“It feels great to get the win, it’s been a couple of years, but honestly, I was really focusing on the Nationwide Tour exemption,” he said.

Stockton started the final round playing in the second to last group, sitting in fifth place at 8-under, five shots back of second-round leader Matt Marshall.

He carded three straight birdies on holes 5, 6 and 7 on the front side, and added birdies on 10 and 14 before making par on the final four holes to get into the clubhouse at 13-under par with one group left.

Things got really interesting down the stretch with the final group of Marshall, Eric Meierdierks and Ryan Dillon, both for the tournament title and for the Nationwide Tour exemption. Dillon recorded an ace on the par-3 14th to get to 12-under, and had a chance to tie Stockton at 13-under on the final hole, but his 25-footer for birdie just missed. Meierdierks had a chance to win in regulation, but he missed a 15-foot birdie attempt and stayed tied with Stockton at 13-under.

But the strangest was Marshall, who started the day in first with a 2-shot lead at 13-under, and after birdies on 10 and 11, he jumped out to a four shot lead at 17-under. He dropped to 15-under after bogeys on 14 and 15, but still had a 2-shot lead when he got to 18 at 15-under par.

He had to take an unplayable after his tee shot found the desert, and he then found the water after taking his drop. With all that, he still had a chance to join the playoff, looking at a 25-footer on the fringe. He missed that and the comebacker, and had to settle for a quad 8 to fall to fourth at 11-under par.

“You never like to see that happen to a guy, but that happens in golf sometimes, not much you can do,” Stockton said. “At that point though I was already mentally preparing for the playoff.”

The playoff lasted just one hole, where Stockton made par and Meierdierks settled for bogey.

“I had a really good, solid week,” Stockton said. “I hit it straight off the tee and I putted really well, especially inside of five feet, which is always good.”

Stockton shot rounds of 70-66-67 over the three days, and had 14 birdies and just one bogey through the 54 holes.

The win jumps Stockton up to first on the GPT money list, and sealed the Nationwide Tour exemption.

“I knew that Ryan (Dillon) was right on my heels for that exemption, so I was trying to keep an eye on what he was doing,” he said.

Stockton has conditional Nationwide Tour status for the 2012 season, but is happy to have a guaranteed start in his future.

“It is nice to know that I have a tournament that I know for sure I will be playing in, and it takes some pressure off of me for some of these early Monday Qualifiers,” he said. “And if I play well hopefully I can get on a roll in some other Nationwide Tour events.”

Dillon shot rounds of 66-67-71 and finished third at 12-under, while Marshall finished fourth and Brian Smock fifth at 9-under after his final-round 67.

Stockton finished atop the Points Race with 3,890, followed by Dillon (3,500), Drew Stoltz (3,112.50), Meierdierks (2,779) and Scott Harrington (2,529).

The boys will take a week off before getting back to action, Feb. 14-16, at Trilogy Golf Club at Power Ranch.

Trailed by seven shots heading into the final round, wins on second playoff hole...

For the first three weeks of the 2012 PGA TOUR season, we reported here that a former Gateway Tour Player finished runner-up in each of those first three tournaments. Through 71 holes at Torrey Pines, it looked like we would be reporting the same thing. That is until Kyle Stanley made an improbable triple-bogey on the par-5 18th, opening the door for former GPTer Brandt Snedeker to win with a par on the second playoff hole.

Snedeker started the round seven shots back of Stanley, and while he did make up a couple of shots during the final round, he fell four back after a bogey on the par-4 17th. He rebounded with a birdie on 18 after hitting a spectacular wedge to about a foot, but knew he had virtually no shot to win with Stanley, playing in the final group behind Snedeker, sitting at 18 tee with a three-shot lead.

“I was just too far back, Kyle had too big a lead,” Snedeker said as he watched the final group on 18 on TV.

But just like that things changed. Stanley’s third shot, a simple wedge from 77 yards out, spun off the green and into the water. After his drop, he chipped to 45 feet, where he then three-putted, carding a triple-bogey 8 which resulted in a playoff with Snedeker.

Both players birdied the first playoff hole (18), then Snedeker caught a huge break on the second playoff hole (par-3 16th), when his 5-iron went long and was headed for trouble before it caught a TV tower, saving him from big trouble. He got up and down for par, while Stanley missed a 45-footer for birdie, and missed the five-foot comebacker for par that would have extended the match.

The win was Snedeker’s third career victory, with all three victories coming after trailing by at least five shots. Apparently Snedeker has a flair for the dramatic, and he also has a good feel for Torrey Pines – This was his third straight Top-10 at the Farmers and fourth in six starts.

“It’s just crazy,” Snedeker said. “To get my mind around what happened the last 30 minutes is pretty hard to do right now. My heart is out to Kyle. I feel bad for him to have to go through this.”

Snedeker had a pretty solid week all around except for his third round. He shot 67-64 in the first two rounds (with just three bogeys), but fell back after a disappointing 2-over 74 that included four bogeys. While he started the final round seven back of Stanley, he saw the deficit climb to nine after Stanley opened the final round with back-to-back birdies.

The seven-shot comeback is tied for the biggest since 2010, when Stuart Appleby made up seven shots at the Greenbrier Classic. The last time someone had a bigger come-from-behind win was 2004, when Stewart Cink made up an eight-shot deficit at the RBC Heritage.

“You never want to see anybody go through that,” Snedeker said. “I don’t care who it is – not even your worst enemy on the planet. Golf is such a funny game, and to have that kind of lead coming into the last hole and not to win is tough. It will be a tough night for him. But he’s an unbelievably-talented player and the sky’s the limit for him.”

“This one I kind of back into,” Snedeker added. “You never like winning a tournament that way. But you do like winning.”

This is a great start to the 2012 campaign, and a great way to build off of 2011, which saw him record one win, two third-place finishes and seven Top-10s on his way to finishing eighth in the 2011 FedEx Cup standings.

Along with Snedeker’s miraculous win, it was another good week for former GPT players at Torrey. A total of 21 players made the cut, with three finishing in the Top-10 and five in the Top-15. Martin Flores and Jimmy Walker joined Snedeker in the Top-10, both finishing T8 at 10-under par. Flores shot rounds of 65-67-75-71 to earn his fifth career Top-10 (he had four Top-10s last year as a rookie); while Walker earned his ninth career Top-10 finish.

Bill Lunde got off to a horrible start with a first round 74 that included six bogeys, but got on track and finished 68-68-69 to finish T13, as did Bubba Watson, who shot 69-71-68-71 to finish 9-under par in his first tournament of the year.

Like we mentioned earlier, this was Snedeker’s third career win, with all three wins coming from at least five shots back. Last year he erased a six-shot deficit and beat Luke Donald on the third playoff hole at the RBC Heritage; and he erased a five-shot deficit in 2007 at the Wyndham Championship, his first career victory on the PGA TOUR.

One other interesting stat from the week – Snedeker was even on the par-3s, 5-under on the par-4s and 12-under on the par-5s.

Four weeks are now in the books, and what a great four weeks it has already been for our GPT alums. They opened with runner-up finishes in each of the first three tournaments, and then of course Snedeker’s gigantic come from behind win at Torrey. Next up is a trip to the TPC Scottsdale for the Waste Management Phoenix Open, Feb. 2-5. Can Snedeker go back-to-back? Will we see another GPT alum in the hunt? Check back here next week for a recap of all the action.

Good luck to all!

Stoltz, Berg and Delgado atop the leaderboard in Points Race going into final tournament...

Ryan Dillon carded birdies on three of his last five holes, including a birdie on 18, to shoot a final-round 5-under 67 on his way to a two-shot victory on the Gateway Pro Tour’s second Arizona Winter Series tournament of the year.

Dillon shot 12-under over the three rounds at Anthem’s Ironwood course, and shot 67-70 over the first two rounds to sit in a tie for second at 7-under, one shot off back of leader Scott Harrington heading into the final round.

Paired with Harrington in the final group, Dillon tied things up at 8-under after a birdie on the par-3 fourth. He stayed at 8-under after going bogey-birdie on five and six, but Harrington got back on top at 9-under after his first birdie of the afternoon on the par-5 sixth. Dillon added a birdie on eight and the duo made the turn knotted at 9-under par.

Derek Berg, playing a group ahead of Dillon and Harrington, recorded back-to-back birdies on 11 and 12 to take the lead at 10-under, but gave one back after his bogey on the par-4 13th.

Harrington had a costly double-bogey on the par-3 11th that dropped him to 7-under, and Dillon had his first birdie on the back nine on the 14th that got him to 10-under. He countered that with another birdie on 15, and added his birdie on the par-5 18th for good measure to give him the two-shot win over Berg and Harrington.

Harrington struggled on the back, but managed to card birdies on 17 and 18 to jump into a T2 with Berg, who also birdied the final hole of the day.

Dillon got the win playing in his first tournament of the year, and it was his first victory since the 2010 season, when he won at Vista Verde in October.

Jesse Mueller shot rounds of 70-68-69 to finish fourth at 9-under par; Benoit Beisser shot a final-round 68 to finish solo fifth at 8-under; and Riley Arp and Drew Stoltz finished T6 at 6-under par.

Stoltz’ T6 finish follows up his T2 last week to move him into first in the Points Race for the exemption into the Nationwide Tour’s BMW Charity Pro-Am. Stoltz leads with 2,850 points, followed by Derek Berg in second with 2,175 points, Lucas Delgado in third with 2,150 points and Dillon with 2,000 points. Rounding out the Top-10 are Scott Harrington in fifth (1,979), Brady Stockton in sixth (1,890), Chris Evans in seventh (1,750), Benoit Beisser in eighth (1,675), Chris Kamin in ninth (1,455) and Brady Schnell in 10th (1,325).

Next up on the GPT is the SCOR Golf Classic at Raven Verrado, Jan. 31-Feb. 2. This is also the final event of the three-tournament Points Race to see who will earn the coveted Nationwide Tour exemption to the BMW Charity Pro-Am. Stoltz has the lead, but it’s a test over three tournaments and the exemption is still up for grabs. Check back here next week to see who comes out on top.

Good luck everyone!
